Time to look beyond Shakib

Published : 24 Apr 2024 08:56 PM

The Bangladesh Cricket Board recently announced a 17-member squad for an upcoming training camp, excluding veteran all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan, in preparation for the upcoming five-match T20 International series against Zimbabwe.

Although not initially included, Shakib may still join the squad later. His sporadic participation in the national team has been due to various factors, which need not be elaborated upon. Facing the realities of aging and injuries, it's time for the team to envision a future without Shakib's consistent on-field presence. His significant contributions as a key player in Bangladesh cricket, particularly his performance with both bat and ball, have been instrumental.

However, his injury during the 2023 World Cup and subsequent absence underscore the necessity for Bangladesh to plan for a future without him in all formats.

The present squad of Bangladeshi players is a blend of seasoned professionals and emerging stars. The likes of Litton Das, Mahmudullah, Mominul Haque, Mushfiqur Rahim, captain Najmul Hossain Shanto and Mehidy Hasan Miraz, offer invaluable experience and mentorship to the younger players. Newer talents such as Afif Hossain, Tanzid Hasan Tamim, Mahmudul Hasan Joy, and Mohammad Naim show promise in taking up the mantle in the batting department.

In terms of bowling, Mustafizur Rahman and Taskin Ahmed are established fast bowlers, complemented by quality spinners like Mehidy, Nayeem Hasan, and Taijul Islam. The emerging all-rounder Rishad Hossain brings a unique edge with his leg-spin and powerful batting. Young pacers Shoriful Islam, Tanzim Hasan Sakib, and Mrittunjoy Chowdhury infuse the pace attack with fresh vigour.

Furthermore, cultivating future leaders from within the team is essential, alongside integrating youthful talent and providing them with substantial international experience. Players such as Rishad Hossain, Tanzid Tamim, Tanzim Sakib, and Mrittunjoy Chowdhury should seize more opportunities to showcase their skills on a bigger platform.

While filling Shakib’s shoes is a formidable task, the Bangladesh cricket team is equipped to meet the challenge. Through strategic planning and talent development, the team can anticipate a bright future that builds upon the legacy of one of their most esteemed players. This transition will demand patience and collective effort, but the available talent holds promise for the continued growth and success of country’s cricket.

Moreover, by fostering the next generation of cricketers and strengthening the domestic cricket infrastructure, Bangladesh can honour Shakib Al Hasan's legacy and aspire to reach new milestones in the international cricket landscape.
