Tigers, though returned home with an immensely disappointing World Cup mission but certainly they have a great relief, as their spot in the Champions Trophy tournament was confirmed when they finished as eighth in the World Cup points table.
Bangladesh in a bid to seal a semifinal spot in World Cup for the first time in their history, started the mission in a style with beating Afghanistan by six wickets.
But thereafter their performances immensely collapsed as they lost six matches at a stretch and then regained some pride, edging Sri Lanka past in a controversial match that first ever 'timed out' dismissal of Sri Lankan veteran Angelo Mathews.
No matter failing to do expected performances, but Tigers returned home with some consolation, as they made it success of managing a room in the Champions Trophy, the second biggest tournament of ICC will be participated by eight teams to be held in Pakistan in 2024.
When Tigers were almost uncertain about their qualification in the Champions Trophy, thanks to India defeated Netherlands in the last match of the first phase ensured Bangladesh’s place in the eight nations’ tournament.
Though it was more than predictable that India would defeat Netherlands but in accordance with the equations, Bangladesh had to wait until the India win, because of any upset (would be the biggest upset in the World Cup history) could shatter the Tigers’ last hope of playing in the Champions Trophy.
If the Netherlands could stun India, the top favourites to win the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup, they (Ireland) would have six points and would qualify for the Champions Trophy leaving behind Bangladesh.
Bangladesh and Netherlands, despite obtaining as many four points from their nine outings with winning two matches each, but by virtue of better Net Run Rate (NRR), Bangladesh earned the feat to qualify for the Champions Trophy.
So, there is no way to think that the Tigers returned home without any success, might be their performances throughout the tournament were very disappointing.
Bangladesh displayed overall very dismal performances apart from two matches, one was their opening encounter against Afghanistan and another was the eighth match against Sri Lanka.
Bangladesh won against Afghanistan and Sri Lanka when suffered defeats in the rest of their seven matches, some of the defeats were very humiliating, specially, against the Netherlands, it was just a woeful show of Tigers when they were bundled out for 142 runs chasing to 229 runs target.
However, Tigers could not do the results were expected from them there is a big satisfaction that they could manage their qualification to play in the Champions Trophy and did not back to home in empty hands, otherwise it would be more shocking.
