Proper and healthy competition in the trade and business sector can be the best way of ensuring a pleasant situation among the consumers in general besides restoring disciplined and congenial atmosphere in the business sector.
Concerted efforts of all the government and non-government organizations concerned and other stakeholders is very important to take the region's business sector forward with healthy competition instead of any unhealthy means.
To this end, Bangladesh Competition Commission (BCC) has been working relentlessly for the last couple of years.
The observation came at a seminar titled "Role of Stakeholders to ensure Proper Competition in Trade and Business" held at the office conference hall of Divisional Commissioner here on Wednesday.
Divisional and district administrations jointly hosted the Rajshahi divisional seminar discussing and devising ways and means on how to attain the cherished goal in this field collectively.
BCC Chairperson Md. Mofizul Islam addressed the meeting as chief guest, while Members GM Saleh Uddin, Dr AFM Manzur Kadir and Nasreen Begum disseminated their expertise on the issue as resource persons with Divisional Commissioner GSM Zafarullah in the chair.
Deputy Inspector General of Police Abdul Baten, Commissioner of Rajshahi Metropolitan Police Abu Kalam Siddique, Additional Divisional Commissioner Dr Ziaul Haque and President of Rajshahi Chamber of Commerce and Industries Masudur Rahman also spoke on the occasion.
The meeting was told that the Competition Act has been enacted in 2012 to promote, ensure and sustain congenial atmosphere for the competition in trade in the context of gradual economic development of the country.
Preventing, controlling and eradicating collusion, monopoly and oligopoly, combination or abuse of dominant position or activities adverse to the competition are allied objectives of the Act.
BCC Chairperson Mofizul Islam said their Act is intended to protect the business sector through eradicating all sorts of manipulation and anomalies as the trade and business sector contributes a lot towards meeting up the peoples' demands besides bolstering the country's economy.
He said they need support from all quarters for successful implementation of BCC mandates and commitments to the public in general to ensure their welfare.
