Forging social resistance against abuse of drugs along with its illicit trafficking and trading can be the crucial means of protecting the young generation from drug-addiction.
Simultaneously, concerted efforts of all the government and non-government entities concerned and the community has become an urgent need to ensure a drug abuse free society to attain the cherished goal.
The observation came at a divisional level discussion to generate mass-awareness against abuse of drugs organized by the divisional office of the Department of Narcotics Control (DNC) at Shilpakala Academy Auditorium in the city on Thursday.
Secretary to the Security Service Division of the Ministry of Home Abdullah Al Mamud Chowdhury addressed the meeting as the chief guest, while Director General of the Directorate of Narcotics Control Abdul Wahab Bhuiyan spoke as special guest with Divisional Commissioner GSM Zafarullah in the chair.
Additional Deputy Inspector General of Police Rashidul Hassan, Deputy Commissioner Abdul Jalil and Additional Commissioner of Rajshahi Metropolitan Police Faruque Hossain also spoke on the occasion.
DNC Divisional Director Fazlur Rahman welcomed the participants.
Abdullah Al Mamud Chowdhury said all the local government institutions side by side with the public and private bodies should come forward and work together to attain the cherished result in this regard as the drug-abusing situation is gradually aggravating. He said the present government has a declaration of zero tolerance against drug-addiction and urged all quarters to come forward to protect the young generation from the grip of social crime.
"We have to build a healthy society to achieve sustainable development goals," he said, adding the movement against drug abuse should be turned into a social movement.
Mamud Chowdhury said the DNC and other law enforcing agencies alone are not capable of combating the social disease, but community participation coupled with family and social contribution is very important to this end.
Abdul Wahab Bhuiyan said full-length support of the community in general and leaders of influences in particular can be the effective means of freeing the society from abuse of drugs along with its illicit trade and trafficking. Creation of mass-awareness about the curse of drug-abuse coupled with its fatal consequences has become crucial to mitigate the social disease.
