The government is moving forward to set up three more science and technology universities in Narayanganj, Lakshmipur and Satkhira aiming to develop professional expertise in science and technology education.
The ‘Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Science and Technology University, Narayanganj Bill, 2023’ was placed in the Jatiya Sangsad (JS) on Thursday (October 26, 2023).
Education Minister Dr Dipu Moni moved the Bill in the House with Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury in the chair.
The education minister placed two other bills in the House titles ‘Laxmipur Science and Technology University Bill, 2023’ and ‘Satkhira Science and Technology University Bill, 2023’.
After placing the Bills in the House, these were sent to the respective parliamentary standing committee for providing report within three days.
According to the University Grants Commission (UGC), there are now 58 public universities in the country and academic activities are going on in 54 of the universities.
The number of the public universities would be 61 with these three ones. Besides, there are 113 private universities in the country.
Earlier on August 1, the UGC gave permission to three new public universities to start academic activities from the next year.
The universities are Kurigram Agricultural University, Sunamganj Science and Technology University and Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Science and Technology University, Pirojpur.
Of these universities, Sunamganj Science and Technology University was established in 2020 and the rest two were established in 2022.
President will be the chancellor of the three universities, which are going to be established, while syndicates will be formed to run them. Also, a vice chancellor, a pro vice chancellor and a treasurer will be appointed for each of them. There will also be an academic council for each of them.
The academic council will be composed of one representative nominated by the University Grants Commission (UGC). The academic councils of the universities will be similar to those of other universities.
Shahjalal University of Science and Technology was established in Sylhet in 1986, It was the first of its kind in the country.
The other science and technology universities are in Tangail, Dinajpur, Patuakhali, Noakhali, Jashore, Pabna, Gopalganj, Rangamati, Chandpur, Habiganj and Sunamganj.
