Three held over bank robbery in broad daylight

Police detained three suspects in connection with robbery at the state-owned Sonali Bank’s Uthali Bazar branch at Jibannagar upazila in Chuadanga. There were detained from their respective residences in the early morning on Monday. 

The detainees are Jony, 25, son of Rahman of Akundibaria village of Chuadanga sadar upazila, Kalu, 28, son of Delbar, and Ridoy, 28, son of Hasmat Ali.  

Earlier, Abu Bakar Siddique, manager of the branch, filed the case against three people with Jibannagar Police Station on Sunday over bank robbery. 

Officer-in-Charge (OC) Jibannagar Police Station Md Saiful Islam said that police arrested the three people for interrogation. 

The robbery took place at Sonali Bank’s Uthali Bazar branch at about 1:15 pm on Sunday. At the time, the robbers, wearing personal protective equipment (PPE) and helmets, took everyone hostage at gunpoint and looted almost Tk 9 lakh in cash. 

Upon receiving the news, Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Chuadanga Nazrul Islam Sarkar, Additional DIG of Police of Khulna range Md Nahidul Islam, Superintendent of Police Md. Jihadul Islam, and senior officials from DGFI, DSP and CID visited the spot.

SP Md. Jahidul Islam said the bank lacked security arrangements including CCTV cameras. Police are working in the field to recover the looted money.

A customer of the bank said that the security guards of the branch don’t perform their duty properly. A shopkeeper of Uthali Bazar said that guard gossip in tea stall even the banking hour. 

Abdul Mannan Piltu, a resident of the area, said that people of the area are concerned following the bank robbery. 

Additional DIG of Police Md Nahidul Islam questioned over the security of the bank. He said that the building, where the bank is running, is not suitable for banking activities.
