Three female garment workers killed in Manikganj road crash

Three female workers were killed and 25 others injured, in a head-on collision between a bus carrying the garment workers and a truck near on Dhaka-Paturia highway in Boali Bridge area at Shibalaya in Manikganj on Thursday.

The accident took place at around 6:30am.

The deceased were identified as Brithi Akhtar (28), wife of Md Iqbal Hossain, Sabina Akhtar (26), wife of Md Sabbir Hossain and Fuli Begum (31), wife of Abdul Baten Sheikh, of Samaj Ghar village of Shibalaya upazila. They were workers of Tarashima Aperials, a garment factory at Nayadinghi in Manikganj.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Barangail Highway Police Mohammed Ibrahim said the accident occurred when a passenger bus collided with a Paturia bound truck, which was coming from the opposite direction in the morning amid torrential rain. At that time, the truck lost control and fell into a roadside ditch and the bus got twisted on the road.

Sabina Akhter was killed on the spot. Two others were declared dead when they were taken to the hospital.

Shammi Akhter, the emergency doctor of Shibalaya Upazila Health Complex, said 20 people have been given medical treatment in the hospital so far. However, two female garment workers died before they were brought to the hospital.

Police team from Shibalaya rushed to the spot and rescued the body of the deceased from the damaged vehicle. The body was sent to Manikganj Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy.

Police seized the truck and the bus from the spot. However, its drivers and staff managed to flee the scene. A case was filled with of Barangail Highway Police Station in this connection.
