Three electronic gates (e-gate) have been installed at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HSIA) in the city as the government is going to launch e-passport within the next month. “Distribution of e-passport will start on July 1. We installed three e-gates in the HSIA on trial basis. The immigration officials were imparted training on operating the e-passport gate,” Brigadier General Saidur Rahman Khan, director of the Introduction of e-Passport, and Automated Border Control Management Project, told newsmen on Monday, reports BSS.

The e-gate, however, will be installed gradually at all the airports and land ports across the country, he said. According to Immigration and Passports Department sources, 50 e-gates will be installed in Dhaka, Sylhet and Chattogram international airports and Benapole and Banglabandha land ports. Once the e-passport is launched, the immigration process will be easier for the people, the sources said, adding that the passengers could not stand in queue as the e-gate will be open automatically for the people having verified and valid information.
