Different journalists’ organisations including Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU), Dhaka Union of Journalists (DUJ) and Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists (BFUJ) have protested and condemned a DSA case threat to Daily Kalbela journalist Dipu Sarwar.
In a statement on Tuesday, DRU president Mursalin Nomani and general secretary Mainul Hasan Sohel expressed their deep concern and condemned the case threat.
Journalist Dipu Sarwar said, “In a phone call on Tuesday, a man named Monowar Hossain threatened to file a case under Digital Security Act (DSA) against me for publishing a report at Daily Kalbela on Sunday. He also threatened to see me.”
“Dipu Sarwar published a report at Daily Kalbela following journalism ethics. The threat to file a case under DSA against him is a threat to free journalism.” DRU said in the statement.
The organisation also demanded to bring Monowar Hossain to book for threatening the journalist.
DRU leaders said, “Digital Security Act (DSA) is a threat to free and independent journalism. It is an obstruction to investigative journalism. Journalists are often subjected to misuse of the act.”
They also urged to cancel the Digital Security Act (DSA) immediately.
