Thousands win anti-poverty fight in Narsingdi Char areas

Thousands of extremely poor people living in the 12 remote char unions of Sadar, Belabo and Raipura upazilas of Narsingdi district have successfully defeated poverty through various income generating activities, reports BSS. 

Locals said most of the people here have achieved success through farming groundnut, sweet potato and various vegetables in the vast tracts of sandy char lands in the Meghna and the Arial Khan river basins.

Beside, a number of poor people living in the char villages of the district have also achieved self-reliance through rearing of livestock in the char lands and fish farming and duck rearing in the rivers, the locals said.

The Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) provided training to the farmers of char villages on groundnut, sweet potato and various vegetables cultivation.

The DAE also provided them with seeds and pesticides free of cost, deputy director of department of agriculture extension (DAE) Shovan Kumar Dhar told BSS.

Now, the people of char villages in Narsingdi district are leading a completely changed life with achieving hygienic sanitation and access to pure drinking water, reducing of malnutrition to their children, women and pregnant women. Their children are now going to schools and madrasas regularly, the DAE deputy director added.
