Thousands of families in Bera Municipality of Pabna have been inundated due to waterlogging in several wards of several wards of Bera Municipality including several unions of Bera Municipality due to continuous rains and rising water in Jamuna River.

Haturia Nakalia Union, Kaitola Union and low lying areas of Bera Municipality are located inside the flood control dam of Pabna Irrigation Project along the west bank of Jamuna.

Thousands of families in Pechakola Kundupara, Haturia, Joynagar, Maniknagar, Tarapur and Panchuria villages of the union have been suffering due to water logging for the last one month.

Locals said that due to the waterlogging, the unpaved roads leading to those villages were broken and submerged in water. As a result, thousands of people are living a miserable life.

Many houses in these villages are flooded. On the other hand, more than two hundred families are living inhumane lives in Ghior of Kaitola Union, inside the old Mujib Dam of Vijayalganj village in Bengal and outside the present flood control dam.

This has posed a threat to public health. Locals have already appealed to the Bera Water Development Board authorities for redressal of the water blockage, said Mohammad Mannan Fakir, UP member of Ward 5 of Kaitola Union.

A pumping station was constructed at Kaitola Union on the west bank of the river Jamuna to alleviate waterlogging within the Pabna project. According to the Kaitola pumping station, water is flowing from the country side at Kaitola point to the river side by about nine inches. At present all the gates of the switch gate are closed.
