Bengali films have been around for decades. Its history is also rich. Films served as a tool in any crisis of the country. From the beginning of the country’s history, many unspoken sentiments were expressed on celluloid during the language movement and liberation war.

Though the history of Bengali goes back decades, the 'National Film Awards' have started from 1975. This is the only state and highest honour given for films in Bangladesh. The Government of Bangladesh awards this prize for the significant contribution in the development of the film industry.

Every year, artists receive the award from the Prime Minister of the country. Earlier, the lifetime honor award was not included. It was first introduced from 2009.

The prize includes a medal of eighteen carat, fifteen grams of gold, a replica of the medal and a certificate of honor. One lakh taka is given to the lifetime award recipient. The best full-length film producer and the best short-length film producer are given Tk 50,000. In addition to this, the best documentary film producer, and best film director are given Tk 50,000 and for other awards Tk 30,000 is given.

But some of the most renowned actors of Bengali cinema have rejected this prestigious award for various reasons. The tradition of refusing to accept the award started in 1977 with the then superhit actor Shabana. She was selected for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in the film 'Janani'. But she did not accept the award.

In the year 1982, renowned writer Syed Shamsul Haque did not accept the award of Best Dialogue Writer for the film ‘Boro Bhalo Lok Chilo’. In 1973, Suborna Mustafa received the award for Best Supporting Actress. She was given the award for her performance in the film 'Notun Bou' but Suborna did not accept it.

However, Suborna Mustafa received the National Film Award in 2017 as the Best Supporting Actress jointly with with Runa Khan for the film ‘Gohin Baluchor’. Although she rejected the previous award, the actress accepted the award from Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on December 8 this year.

In 1990, famous actor Golam Mustafa followed the footsteps of his daughter Suborna Mustafa. He rejected the award he received as Best Supporting Actor for his performance in the film 'Chhutir Phande’.

The list of the winners of the National Film Award 2016 was published in the form of gazette, and Habib's name was revealed as the Best Dance Director for the film 'Niyoti'. Habib then claimed it was a fraud and that he did not work in the film 'Noyoti'. So he rejected the award. There was a lot of controvers regarding the issue at the time.

Popular actor Mosharraf Karim rejected the National Film Award this year. He received the award for the Best Comedy Actor for his performance in 'Komolo Rocket' in the film. However, he rejected the award. He told the media that his character was not comedic at all and that is why he cannot accept the award.
