‘Those responsible for Buriganga launch sinking to be punished’

Khalid Mahmud inaugurates 60-bed specialised Covid-19 unit at Ctg port hospital

State Minister for Shipping Minister Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury said, "Strict punishment will be ensured under the law on the basis of the investigation report of the launch sinking in the Buriganga River. The committee will submit its report within the stipulated time.”  

He also said that there are plans to buy new rescue ships and helicopters for the Chittagong port.

He was speaking to reporters after the inauguration of a 60-bed specialized corona unit and a new hospital building in the port area for Chittagong port officials on Wednesday noon.

'Chittagong port is the lifeline of Bangladesh. We have a responsibility to the people of Chittagong. The port will also be on the side of the people of Chattogram from the social responsibility for the treatment of Covid-19. 

He said, “Due to the courageous steps of those involved with the port, the operation did not stop even for a moment during the corona period. No country in the world was ready to deal with Covid-19. 

Health care has also come to a standstill in developed countries. The people of Bangladesh had courage and courageous management of the government. 

Chittagong Port has been ranked 64th in the list of the world's top 100 container handling ports in 10 years. We want to move up into the 30-50 position.'

A hospital building constructed by Chittagong Port Authorities has been inaugurated. A 100-bed hospital has been set up in 5 blocks with 4 floors on a 6-storey foundation of one lakh square feet. 

A separate gate has been made for each block. The hospital has a separate room for doctors, separate wards for patients and an operating theater.

Chittagong Port Chairman Rear Admiral SM Abul Kalam Azad said, “Thousands of people are flocking to the port. At the risk of their lives, the people of the port have complied with the hygiene rules. 

Some colleagues died of coronary heart disease. They have kept the wheel of the economy in motion. The operation was not stopped for a moment. Stakeholders have collaborated. I firmly believe that we will not deviate from the goal."

He said about the hospital, the port hospital has recruited 159 people including 13 doctors and 36 nurses in the 50-bed corona unit. They have come forward to provide services. BSc, Marine Academy, NMI can provide health care in need. 

If we can provide services to our people, the crowds in the city hospitals will be reduced and the city dwellers will benefit.'Port Member (Administration and Planning) Md. Zafar Alam, Director (Transport) Enamul Karim, Port Secretary Md. Omar Faruq, Chief Medical Officer and other senior officials of the port were present this occasion.
