Thermocol: A fresh breeze of cinematic storytelling at JU

In a campus where poetry often meets protest and drama unfolds beyond textbooks, a new voice has quietly emerged—Thermocol, Jahangirnagar University’s freshly minted cultural collective, is setting out to reimagine how students engage with films and visual narratives.

This isn’t just another cultural club with posters and promises. Thermocol is, as its core team suggests, “a breathing space” for cinephiles, dreamers, and storytellers. Formed by students from the Department of Drama and Dramatics, the group is already drawing curious eyes and creative minds.

The group’s first official appearance was at the JU Journalists’ Association office, where spokesperson Ashwarya Bagchi laid bare the soul of Thermocol: to explore, experiment, and educate through film. “We’re not chasing fame,” she smiled, “we’re building a culture.”

At the heart of the initiative is convener Nabil Mostafa—young, ambitious, and unapologetically passionate. Alongside him, a team of spirited students—Manzur Al Hasan, Sultan Mahmud Raz, Maruf Hossain, Abida Akter Tisha, and Nazmus Sakib—form the executive board. Their work is quietly steered by counselors Raeid Hosen, Tasfiya Rashid, and Khondokar Iftekhar Ahmed.

And then, there’s wisdom. The advisory panel, comprised of Dr Mohammad Tarikul Islam (Government and Politics), Dr Md Mizanur Rahman (Archaeology), and Dr Ameena Islam (Journalism and Media Studies), brings scholarly depth to the youthful energy of Thermocol.

“The idea,” as Nabil puts it, “is not just to watch films, but to dissect, debate, and dream with them. We want students to learn the language of cinema—to tell stories that matter.”

With such thoughtful ambition and cinematic hunger, Thermocol may very well be the spark that transforms casual viewers into visionary storytellers at JU.
