Young adult fiction author, Scott Westerfeld, recently posted a picture of the New York City sky with a hole in the clouds that looked similar to the portal seen in ‘The Avengers’. The 2012 film became the third highest-grossing film of all time at the time, bringing in over $1.5 billion. ‘Avengers ‘was a massive hit that elevated the popularity of Marvel Cinematic Universe to mainstream. Audiences packed the theaters to see fan-favorites like ‘Iron Man’, ‘Thor’, and ‘Captain America’ save Earth from ‘Loki’ and his army.
In the film, Thanos instructs Loki to steal the Tesseract to invade Earth and kill its citizens. After being hypnotized by Loki, scientist Erik Selvig uses the Tesseract to open a portal from across the universe. He does so on the top of a New York City skyscraper, and thus creates a massive hole in the sky. Screen Rant
Audiences learn in ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ that this was just the beginning of Thanos' scheme to destroy half of all life in the universe.
Westerfeld's picture also contains the Brookyln Bridge, which is seen in The Avengers. The film's production team flew across New York City to film some establishment shots and then added in visual effects to get the desired look for the finished film that audiences have since come to know and love.
