The DCEU has just introduced its real replacement for the ‘Justice League: the Justice Society’. The DC Universe isn’t without its fair share of super teams, but aside from the ‘Suicide Squad’, the DCEU hasn’t managed to do anything noteworthy with the few that it has tried to set up thus far. ‘Black Adam’ looks like it’ll change all of that, however, with its introduction of the iconic Justice Society.
The first major superhero team the DCEU tried to establish was the Justice League in the appropriately-titled ‘Justice League’. Unfortunately, the movie was a box office failure that was further tainted by the publicisation of production issues and the abusive behavior of director Joss Whedon. The release of Zack Snyder’s Justice League restored some goodwill for the brand with a part of the base, but Warner Bros. doesn’t appear interested in continuing with the Snyderverse, and the DCEU is likely done with trying to adapt DC’s most iconic superhero team, at least for now.
However, DC’s “The World Needs Heroes” trailer sets up a perfect replacement for the Justice League: the Justice Society. The Justice Society is the premiere superhero team of the DC Universe, making their debut 20 years before the Justice League, and they’re set to make their cinematic debut in the upcoming film Black Adam with the members Atom Smasher, Hawkman, Cyclone, and Doctor Fate. Plot details for the film are currently scarce, but the uncertain status of the DCEU's Justice League and the pre-established elements of the DCEU, as a whole, give credence to the idea that it’ll be used to set the Justice Society up as major players going forward.
There’s a definite appeal to the idea of a big superhero team patrolling the world and keeping people safe, as the success of the ‘Avengers’ in the Marvel Cinematic Universe can attest to, so if the Justice League are considered off the table, pushing another recognizable team in the DC Universe into the spotlight is the best way to go.
