Dhaka North City Corporation Mayor Md Atiqul Islam shared the information while addressing a function to celebrate "Sixteen Days of Activism" at Justice Shahabuddin Ahmed Park in Gulshan-2 area of the capital on Wednesday.

The DNCC mayor said that the theme of this year's Sixteen Days of Activism was "Build an Orange World, Stop Violence Against Women" which is timely and significant.

Two transgender citizens Moinul Islam Anamika and Asif Newaz Megh, two acid-attack survivours Nasrin Jahan and Lulu Mansura, two people with special challenges Sabina Yasmin Shilpi and Sanjida Akhter and Monir Hossain, brother of Mainuddin Hossain, the student killed in an accident in Rampura; a total of seven individuals have been employed by the DNCC.

Atiqul said that social movement should be formed along with proper implementation of existing laws against social irregularities including violence against women, dowry system, child marriage, acid attacks etc. Moral education and values must be established in people and all men and women must be evaluated as human beings.

“Bangladesh is now a role model of development in the world as Bangladesh is moving forward at an irresistible pace in terms of development under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina,” said the mayor.

Also present at the event, Minister for Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Anisul Huq said, “Violence against women cannot be stopped by law alone. There will be laws, but there will be no equality without social awareness. So social awareness is important.”

Women have been discriminated against in our country like other countries due to the social system. Our Prime Minister has enacted many laws to stop this. There are a number of laws, including the Women and Child Abuse Prevention Act, the Legal Aid Act, the Domestic Violence Prevention and Protection Act etc., he added.

“These laws are made to protect women. We want women in society to live with their rights. There is no difference between men and women and establishing this is the goal of the government so that they can all walk with dignity,” he said.

After the speeches, the Minister for Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs and the DNCC Mayor conferred special honors on 5 elected councilors of DNCC area in recognition of their contribution to the war of liberation.
