A Dhaka court has granted bail to Azizur Rahman, a rickshaw puller who was beaten by a mob at Dhanmondi-32 while attempting to pay tribute to Bngabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

His lawyer confirmed that, as there are no other cases against him, there are no legal obstacles to his release from jail.

On Sunday, Metropolitan Magistrate M. A. Azharul Islam granted the bail after hearing arguments. Advocate Farzana Yasmin Rakhi appeared for the accused, while the prosecution opposed the bail plea. After hearing both sides, the court approved his bail.

Earlier, on Saturday, Azizur was produced before the court, where the investigation officer, Sub-Inspector Md. Touhidur Rahman of Dhanmondi Police Station, sought to keep him in jail. The petition claimed that witness testimony and evidence linked Azizur to the attempted murder case linked to Students Against Discrimination (SAD) Movement, adding that he was slightly injured when apprehended by locals at Dhanmondi-32. The court initially rejected bail and ordered him sent to jail.

On Friday (August 15), Azizur was beaten by a mob at Dhanmondi-32 while placing flowers in tribute and was later arrested by police.

According to the case statement, on August 4 last year, during the anti-discrimination student movement, complainant Md. Ariful Islam was leading a procession from New Market to the Science Lab area under Dhanmondi Police Station. Around 2:30 pm, the accused and others allegedly fired shots and throw petrol bombs and hand grenades at the demonstrators. Ariful was shot in the back and collapsed immediately. He later underwent two months of treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital before recovering.

On April 2 this year, Ariful filed an attempted murder case at Dhanmondi Police Station in connection with the incident.
