There are only a few good men as it is said who contribute towards making of a society. At a time when inflation has hit the market so deeply that fruits and vegetables is slowly disappearing from the common man’s plates, Thakurgaon District Chhatra League leaders and members provide the daily dose of nutrition for free to those who can’t afford them.

Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) leaders and activists have formed a fund with their own donations and have stood by the people as per the instructions of the Prime Minister. As part of the Food Assistance Programme, they are distributing vegetables amid homeless and destitute families of the area. They are buying potato, pointed gourd, pumpkin, tomato, snake gourd, yardlong beans, Malabar spinach, okra, red spinach, amaranth leaf etc from the local raw market every day and distributing it among the poor families.

The locals have appreciated the noble deed of BCL. “Their work during the coronavirus crisis is praiseworthy. This will encourage others to lend a helping hand and support each other,” said Sudharani of Halpara area. Rickshaw puller Rahim said, “As there are no activities and movement of vehicles in the area, we have become jobless. Rich people should come forward to distribute relief so that low-income people can get something to eat”, he added.

Speaking to our correspondent, Sanowar Parvez Pulok, general secretary of the district BCL said, “When people are suffering with their food running out of stock, the people should help one another. After knowing that these people are facing scarcity of vegetable, we decided to help them by distributing vegetables.”

“These people were facing scarcity of vegetables and food items due to closer of market in view nationwide lockdown. Besides, we have launched Thakurgaon district BCL free vegetable market under the direction of Central BCL. We are distributing these vegetables to Ward no-12 of the district, Pulok added.”

It is to be noted that the district administration has been distributing relief to the unemployed people through the Upazila Nirbahi Officers every day to alleviate the food problem. The district administration has taken another programme as well. So far, 674.855 metric tons of rice has been distributed among 90,145 families in 5 upazilas and 3 municipalities of the district and also distributed dry foods, Seheri and Iftar items of Tk 39,61,285.
