Thai variety of mangoes cultivated in Chuadanga

Saddam Molla, a young agricultural entrepreneur, has succeeded in cultivating Thailand varieties of mangoes in Chuadanga. His mango trees are full of flowers and ripe fruits. Mangoes of light brown, light raw yellow, red yellow and green colors are hanging in bunches. This type of mango is in demand in the market of the country including Chuadanga. It is possible to increase this mango cultivation commercially through young entrepreneurs.

In 2015, Saddam Molla, a young agricultural entrepreneur from Raipur village in Jibannagar upazila of Chuadanga district, started a mango orchard experimentally with seedlings of banana and Kyuzai varieties from Thailand. He planted 50 saplings of this variety on 1 bigha of land. Then in 2019, 28 varieties of 600 mango trees were planted on 6 bigha of land. As the weather was favorable and the trees started to grow.

Saddam Molla, the owner of the mango garden, said that there are 30 varieties of mango trees including Miyazaki, Kyuzai, Kingchakapat, Dokmai, Chiangmai, Palmer, Thai Banana, Brunei King, Blockstone, Alphan Dos now. The buds start to appear planting after 18 months. After two months of buds, a full-fledged mango takes shape.

Bagging method is being used to protect the mangoes from insects and diseases. Mangoes begin to ripen in the first month of Joyestho. Depending on the size, each mango weights from 200 grams to 1 kg.

He also said that foreign varieties of mangoes are sweet, tasty and juicy. Mango batter is thin. Depending on the variety, the color of the top and inside of unripe mangoes is different. Being non-native these require careful maintenance to use fertilizers and pesticides. 

Bananas and Kiuzai mangoes are being sold in the market at Tk 200 per kg. People are coming from far and wide to the garden to see the new variety of mangoes.

Bivas Chandra Saha, Deputy Director of Chuadanga Agricultural Extension Department said, Saddam Mulla’s garden has 650 mango trees of 30 foreign varieties. In order to increase this mango cultivation more, various initiatives will be taken by agricultural extension department.
