The main targets of terrorists are to create panic among people. Their major aim is also to get attention from the media outlets. The program titled the role of media in combating extremism was organized at the National Press Club in the city.

Monirul, also the chief of Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit said, “ JMB carried series bombs attacks in 63 districts in 2005 to get media coverage.” Through their attacks, they expressed their existence.

They require media for various reasons, including to express their responsibility in the attacks, to create panic among public  and to convey their message, he said. They are making publicity of their attacks through media, Monirul, a leading counter terrorism expert  continued.

Terrorists also use media coverage to convey their message among their supporters and to recruit their potential supporters for their terrorists outfits. Militants go against media if media does not publicize their attacks as per their will. In that case, they also target media workers, Monirul added .

He also advises not to present terrorists as hero so that no one is inspired to be extremist. Live telecast should be also allowed, he further suggested.  Center for Social Advocacy and Research Foundation organized the view exchange program.

CSARF chief and Dhaka University’s Assistant Professor Shabnam Azim also spoke at the program. Senior media personal also took part at the program.
