Tensions rise in Cox’s Bazar over eviction drive along Bakkhali River

An eviction drive by BIWTA (Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority) targeting illegal structures along the Bakkhali River in Cox’s Bazar was temporarily halted following fierce protests by local residents. Demonstrators blocked the main road and airport road by burning tyres and placing barricades, creating severe traffic congestion and disrupting access to Cox’s Bazar Airport.

The eviction began around 9:30 am on Friday at the 6 No. Ghat area and continued until 11:15 am, when mounting tensions forced authorities to suspend the operation. Protesters claimed the drive was unlawful and accused the BIWTA of forcibly evicting settlers without proper notice.

Law enforcement officers and local political leaders, including former MP Lutfor Rahman Kajol, intervened to calm the situation. Kajol urged protesters to clear the roads and assured that discussions would be held with higher authorities.

The High Court had earlier ordered the eviction of all encroachments within four months to protect the river. BIWTA, designated as custodian of the river since 2010, cited non-cooperation from local administration as a reason for delayed enforcement.

After two days of operations, BIWTA reports that 70 acres of riverbank land have been reclaimed. Further action is expected under the supervision of the Ministry of Shipping and court directives.
