A 14-year-old schoolboy drowned while swimming in the sea at Cox’s Bazar on Wednesday.
Raiyan Nur Abu Sami, a Year-8 pupil at Cox’s Bazar Boys’ High School and son of Mohammad Ismail of Ghonarpara, left home around 09:00 without telling his family. He joined friends for a kick-about on the beach and, at 11:00, the group decided to cool off in the water near Kabita Chattar point. A strong current dragged three boys out of their depth. Onlookers and friends managed to pull all three ashore and rushed them to Cox’s Bazar District Hospital, where doctors declared Raiyan dead.
Additional Deputy Inspector-General Apel Mahmud of the Tourist Police said he had been briefed on the accident.
He reminded visitors that playing football on the beach is prohibited, yet many ignore the rule, particularly at poorly patrolled spots. The boy’s body has since been returned to his family.
