The increasing trend of using modern technology in agriculture in Bangladesh is giving the desired dividends. Farmers are happy as machineries help increase production while the cost of production is going down. The cost of having a farm land ready for sowing seeds in the traditional way has gone up but it can be done at half the cost with a tractor. Even ripe crops can be cut with a machine within the day and at less cost. Now a days, tractors on agriculture lands is a common sight across the country.
Also, one has to acknowledge mobile phone’s role in modernisation of agriculture. Farmers are receiving information over mobile phones on what kind of pests can attack their crops under changing weather conditions; what kind of fertiliser to be used; what is the price of their produce in the nearest market; when should they pick vegetables and so on. Getting accurate information at the right time reduces the risk of crop damage from various natural disasters and pest attacks, and it also helps them get good price of their harvest.
the use of modern
technology in the agricultural
sector will make it possible to produce
more crops on a small piece of land
This needs to be mentioned that due to rapid urbanization, unplanned industrialization and construction of houses on agricultural land, the amount of cultivable land is decreasing across the country. Therefore, it is important to increase production to meet the market demand to feed the growing population.
Necessity is forcing farmers to adapt to the changing situation, so they are giving more and more importance to mechanization of agriculture. According to them, the use of modern technology in the agricultural sector will make it possible to produce more crops on a small piece of land. With this, time and labor will be saved and solve the food needs of the growing population.
There is the other side of the story. The country suffers from laborer crisis during the cultivating seasons. At this time, workers demand high wages. As a result, farmers get no profit in cultivating paddy, especially during the Boro season. So they are depending on agricultural technology.
