Taskin Ahmed and Farhad Reza have been included in the Bangladesh squad for the Tri-nation ODI series in May next month, a press release from the Bangladesh Cricket Board said on Sunday.

Injury-hit Bangladesh added Farhad and Taskin to their squad for the tournament in Ireland to prepare for the World Cup.

Taskin, the fast bowler, and Farhad, the seam bowling all rounder will join the tri-series in Ireland, which begins next week.

Taskin in particular will be cover for key bowler Rubel Hossain, who has been suffering from a side injury, and fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman, who is yet to recover from an ankle injury.

"We are concerned because the Bangladesh team is facing some injury problems, especially with their fast bowlers," Bangladesh Cricket Board chief selector Akram Khan said.

"The World Cup will be a long one, so we decided to take two more players for the Ireland series."

Farhad, who last played a one-day international in 2014, did well in the recent Dhaka Premier League where he claimed 38 in 16 matches.

Taskin was a standout in the Bangladesh Premier League Twenty20 in January before a ligament injury sidelined him. He was not considered ready when the World Cup squad was announced on 16 April.

Bangladesh open their World Cup campaign against South Africa at The Oval in London on 2 June.

Taskin, who recovered from an injury towards the latter rounds of the Dhaka Premier League recently, was not considered for either the Ireland tour or the World Cup in England. Reza, who was one of the best performers of the DPL as well as the Bangladesh Premier League, was also not in initial consideration for the tour.

The board had initially picked a 15-member squad for the Ireland tour, with youngsters Nayeem Hasan and Yasir Ali Rabbi as stand-by members of the squad.

With the addition of the two, the squad has swelled to 19, with the selectors having earlier added offspinner Nayeem Hasan and offspinning allrounder Yasir Ali to the 15-member provisional World Cup squad, which was picked two weeks ago.

Taskin's selection didn't come as much of a surprise, given that he was among the standby players for the World Cup - there are injury concerns around senior pacemen Rubel Hossain and Mustafizur Rahman.

But Farhad's selection was a bit out of the blue, given that he hasn't been part of the senior side since the 2014 World T20, and last played an ODI in 2011. ESPNcricinfo understands that coach Steve Rhodes requested the BCB to include Farhad, likely as a back-up alternative for Mohammad Saifuddin, who has a tennis elbow problem. Farhad was the highest wicket-taker in the Dhaka Premier League that concluded last week.

Taskin Ahmed, who hasn't played an ODI since October 2017, was left out of the initial squad for the tournament. However, the selectors have now added both the players to the squad. Taskin and Reza weren't picked for the World Cup to be held in England next month.

The 25-year-old fast bowler has been troubled by an ankle injury that he suffered during the Bangladesh Premier League. The tearaway quick returned to competitive cricket by playing in in the Dhaka Premier League. Taskin has taken 45 scalps at an average of 31.13 in the ODI format. Meanwhile, Reza, who hasn't represented Bangladesh in ODIs since 2014, found a place in the squad on the back of being the highest wicket-taker in the DPL, snaring 38 wickets.
