It is good to note that the government is getting tough on the dishonest traders involved with illegal hoarding of essential commodities to earn windfall profits ahead of the holy fasting month. After holding an inter-ministerial meeting at the secretariat on Sunday evening Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi said that the government will form a taskforce to check price hike. We are told that the taskforce will conduct drives to monitor prices of essentials in the markets throughout the country.
On the other hand, on Monday the cabinet has directed the National Board of Revenue to cut down the existing 15 percent VAT on the imports of essential commodities, including edible oil, sugar to keep those prices at a tolerable level. It also asked the authorities concerned to execute the directive immediately.
The government has taken a firm
stance to ensure fair price of daily
essentials in local markets
The prices of essential commodities including edible, rice, pulses, sugar, vegetables, meat and onion, are skyrocketing. Country’s people are going through immense sufferings as an unholy business syndicate has hiked the prices of daily essentials taking advantage of the rising prices in the international market. The prices of daily essentials keep soaring at a time when people are struggling to make ends meet due to the fallout of the Covid-19 impacts.
However, the government has fixed the prices of essentials talking with the traders and other stakeholders. The government has taken a firm stance to ensure fair price of daily essentials in local markets.
The members of taskforce will work in the fields to carry out the directions within a day or two. The civil administration and law-enforcement agencies must cooperate with the taskforce to make the drive against dishonest businessmen and hoarders a success. We hope the latest measures taken by the government will have a direct impact on the kitchen market and prices of essential commodities will mark a sharp fall across the country immediately in no time.
