Newly elected mayor of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Barrister Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh took charge of the office on Saturday, reports BSS.

Taposh took over the responsibility of the DSCC formally from the chief executive officer of the city corporation Shah Md Imdadul Huq yesterday afternoon as the term of board under the incumbent Mayor Sayeed Khokon expired today, said DSCC’s public relations officer Uttam Kumar Ray.

President and general secretary of Dhaka city south unit of Awami League (AL) Abu Ahmed Mannafi and Humayan Kabir, city AL leader Morshed Kamal and councilor Farid Uddin Ahmed Ratan were present on the charge handing overceremony, among others.

Though the newly elected mayors and councillors of DSCC and Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) took oath of office on February 27, they had to wait until completion of the tenures of incumbent mayors. Polls to the DSCC and DNCC were held on February 1 while ruling Awami League-backed candidates- Barrister Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh and Atiqul Islam-swept the elections as mayors of the DSCC and the DNCC respectively. Taposh defeated Bangladesh Nationalist Party backed candidate Eng Ishraque Hossain while Atiqul defeated Tabith Awal on February 1 election.

Taposh, son of Bangladesh Awami Jubo League founder Sheikh Fazlul Haque Moni, was an elected Member of Parliament in the 11th Jatiya Sangsad from Dhaka-10 constituency. He resigned from his MP post on December 29 last after he got nomination to contest for mayoral post of the DSCC. Taposh is the second mayor of the DSCC after division of the Dhaka City Corporation (DCC) into two city corporations– DNCC and DSCC– in 2015 while Mohammad Sayeed Khokan was elected the first mayor of the DSCC in the year.
