Left handed opening batter Tanzid Hasan Tamim smashed his first fifty against host India in the ICC World Cup at Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium, Pune on Thursday.
The opener took 41 balls to reach half-century with five fours and three over boundaries before being trapped in front off a Kuldeep Yadav delivery as his 43-ball 51-run knock came to an end. Liton also hit a 50 when he scored 66 off 82 balls as Bangladesh reached 93 for a loss of one wicket after 15 overs.
It is Tanzid’s highest score (51) in his World Cup debut. He scored 22 runs from three previous games in the tournament before the match against India.The left-handed batter scored five runs in the opening match against Afghanistan, one run against defending champions England and 16 runs came from his willow against the reigning runners up New Zealand. Tanzid with his opening partner right hand batter Litton Das made 93 runs in the opening stand.
It is a new opening record for Tigers in the World Cup match for Bangladesh when Litton flicked a Shreyas Iyer delivery through square leg for a double in the 12th over, as the duo surpassed the previous best of a 69-run opening stand between Mehrab Hossain Opi and Shahriar Hossain against Pakistan in the 1999 World Cup.
The openers started the match very slowly when both Tanzid and Litton werecautious in the beginning with scoring just 10 runsin the first five overs. However, the openers went on attack from the next overs, dealing in boundaries and scoring at a rapid pace.
Litton Das scored 50 off 62 balls with five fours. It is Litton’sa 12 half-century in ODI,he managed 66 runs from 82 deliveries.
In absence of regular skipper Shakib Al Hasan for their crucial World Cup game against India,vice-captainNajmul Hossain Shanto walked out for the toss. The Tigers won the toss and elected to bat.
“Shakib is struggling a bit. Hopefully, he will recover soon as he is very important for us. Nasum Ahmed has come in to replace him,”Shanto said at the toss.
The team management did not reveal Shakib's injury status officially. However, team director Khaled Mahmud Sujon earlier mentioned that the all-rounder has suffered a tear in his left leg injury.
Bangladesh made another change to the eleven that played in their eight-wicket defeat against New Zealand last Friday in Chennai. Misfiring Taskin Ahmed has been replaced by Hasan Mahmud for the game.
