Tangail, located on the banks of the Jamuna in central Bangladesh, is one of the largest districts in Dhaka Division, covering 3,414.35 sq km with 122,876 acres of forest. The district, crisscrossed by rivers such as Dhaleshwari, Jamuna, Louhajang, Jhinai, Banshai, Bairan, and Langulia, is rich in natural beauty and cultural heritage, making it a prime area for tourism.

Notable attractions include Mohera Zamindarbari, DC Lake, SP Lake, Atia Jame Mosque, 201 Dome Mosque, Nawab Bari Mosque, Hemnagar Zamindarbari, Jamuna Bridge, Basulia (Chapra Bill), Sagardighi, Upandre Sarobar, Bharteshwari Homes, Kortia Zamindarbari, Pakutia Zamindarbari, Mawlana Abdul Hamid Khan Bhasani’s Mausoleum & Museum, Guptobrinabon, Rasulpur National Park, Dokhla Rest House, Pirgacha Rubber Garden, Madhupur Sal Forest, and Water Garden Resort & Spa.

Mohera Zamindarbari, built by brothers Kalicharan and Anand Saha, features the English “U”-shaped Kalicharan Lodge, gardens, a children’s park, and a large pond. Established as a Police Training School in 1972, it was upgraded to a training center in 1990. Entry currently costs Tk 100, though reducing it would allow more visitors to enjoy the site.

Atia Jame Mosque, constructed in 1608 by Saeed Khan Panni under Shah Kashmiri’s guidance, blends Sultanate and Mughal architecture. It is featured on old 10-taka notes, and locals advocate reinstating its image on currency.

201 Dome Mosque in Gopalpur, initiated by Bir Muktijoddha Rafiqul Islam on 13 January 2013 over 15 bighas, is still under construction. Its main dome reaches 81 ft, surrounded by 200 smaller domes and 8 minarets; it can accommodate 15,000 worshippers. Imported tiles, marble, and stone fittings from China and Italy enhance its grandeur.

DC Lake has been revitalized as a recreational center with parks, pedal boats, and a children’s play area. Covering 33.45 acres, it is a popular urban leisure spot, though social discipline and security need strengthening.

Madhupur National Park, spanning over 20,000 acres, offers a deer breeding center and serene natural surroundings, attracting nature lovers. Limited deer populations, however, sometimes disappoint visitors.

Historic Zamindarbari estates like Kortia and Pakutia showcase Mughal and Chinese architectural styles. Pakutia now houses B.C.R.G. Degree College alongside temples and a large pond. Basulia (Chapra Bill), famous for its scenic Hijol tree and water channels, has become a popular tourist spot, though local authorities need to ensure safety and manage crowding.

Mawlana Bhasani’s Mausoleum and Museum in Santosh preserves his legacy and attracts visitors and scholars annually. A dedicated guide could enhance visitors’ understanding of his life and work.

Many of Tangail’s historical and cultural sites are deteriorating over time. Preservation, renovation, and sustainable tourism development are essential to safeguard these treasures for future generations, strengthen the local economy, and create employment opportunities.
