‘Take steps to save rivers’

“Bangladesh  originated from rivers. The country  still survives for the rivers. If the rivers die, Bangladesh will die. So, the rivers of the country must be saved from dying for survival of the country.”

The speakers said these at a dialogue on river at Jaintiapur upazila in Sylhet on Friday. Bangladesh Paribesh Andolan (BAPA) and Sari Nodi Bachao Andolan (Movement for Saving Sari River) jointly arranged the dialogue on the bank of Borgang River marking the International Day of Action for Rivers-2020. 

Local arbitrator Abdus Shakur presided over the programme, while president of Sari Nodi Bachao Andolan Abdul Hye Al-Hadi moderated it. Chairman of Jaintiapur Upazila Parishad and upazila Awami League president Md Kamal Ahmed attended the event as the chief guest while it was attended, among others, by Prof Monoz Kumar Sen, Altafur Rahman, Shawkat Ali Member, journalists Abdul Halim, Golam Sarwar Belal and Meer Md Shoyed Ahmed, MM Ruhel, Sohel Ahmed, Abul Haris Shahar, Musa Mia, Abdus Shakur and Afsar Uddin. 

Speakers of the dialogue said that many influential people and industries are responsible for river pollution and grabbing. They have to face trial. On the other hand, unplanned activities by the authorities concerned are also responsible for dying of some rivers, they said. 

They called upon the authorities concerned to take steps to save the rivers of Sylhet region and all over the country. The rivers of Sylhet region are facing growing threats due to pollution, grabbing and construction dams and barrages at the uppers reaches of the rivers. In this backdrop, the rivers, including Surma, Kushiyara and Sari, are facing threats. Immediate steps must be taken to save the rivers, they said. The speakers also spoke on coronavirus and called upon the people to be aware about the virus.
