While speaking at a view-exchange meeting with high-ups of Bangladesh Army and different law enforcement agencies held in the city recently, BGMEA leaders expressed concern over recent labour unrest and subsequent road blockades by workers, which led to severe traffic congestion and public inconvenience.

They also urged the factory owners to ensure timely payment of wages and allowances, hold regular meetings with workers to foster harmonious industrial relations, and collaborate with industrial police to address their problems. The representatives from Bangladesh Army, Industrial Police, Department of Inspection for Factories and Establishments, deputy commissioner offices of Dhaka and Gazipur districts, DGFI, NSI, Community Policing on RMG, and different garment factories were present in the meeting.

In the meeting, it was unanimously agreed that any issues or conflicts between owners and workers regarding wages or other issues should be resolved soon through discussion among all representatives concerned.

In the meeting, BGMEA leaders, Bangladesh Army, and law enforcers vowed to work together to maintain fair labour conditions. The situation may take a serious turn if the authorities concerned, owners of RMG industries and workers’ representative do not take immediate steps to this end.

Amid workers’ unrest in the garment sector, law enforcers have been deployed in Dhaka and adjacent areas to ensure security. Troops have been deployed in Ashulia, Savar, Mirpur, Rampura, Abdullahpur, Tongi and Gazipur, Konabari.

Workers often take to the streets in our country as many owners do not pay full salary, bonus and arrears as per government order. RMG workers have also been resorting violence in different places on highways and city since a week.

We hope the owners of industries and business units will take immediate steps to safeguard workers’ rights. We also think if workers’ rights are established, government’s efforts to turn Bangladesh into a strong economy and a self-reliant country will be made successful.

The owners of RMG must pay heed to the workers’ demand. We also express our solidarity with the workers struggling for establishing their rights and getting  fair wages.
