The people living in haor areas of the country always struggle for their survival as they have to face natural disasters like flooding every year. Taking into account their plight, the government has been working tirelessly to change the fate of haor people since 2009.

To improve the lifestyle of haor people and protect them from the flooding and other calamities, the government on Wednesday sanctioned over Tk 23.3 crore for repair of the embankments in haor districts. A good many embankments are now being reconstructed by the government to protect the hybrid and high-yielding varieties of Boro paddy in haor areas of the country from flash flood.

The haor people mainly depend on Boro crops.  They are worried about their paddy due to flash floods that usually happen between April and May. The flash flood destroys Boro paddy, particularly in seven haor districts- Kishoreganj, Netrakona, Sunamganj, Moulvibazar, Habiganj, Sylhet and Brahmanbaria every year.

Therefore, the farmers of these areas are the worst sufferers as flash flood pushes them into extreme poverty every year.

The haor areas experience flash floods due to untimely incessant rain and an onrush of water from the upstream every year.

Crops, mainly Boro paddy on vast areas are either damaged or washed away due to flash flood during between April and May. Since the late spring, panic starts gripping haor people as the experience flash flood almost every year following       breaching of embankment.

Therefore, they apprehend that flash flood may occur in the low-lying areas of these districts due to onrush of upstream waters coupled with moderate to very heavy rainfall between April and May and during monsoon. Apart from damaging crops, people living there may also face serious difficulties due to flash flood water.

The onrush of upstream waters coupled with moderate to very heavy downpours also breach embankments submerging many areas.
