TAD disappointed over proposed budget allocation for culture sector

The Theatre Artists’ Association of Dhaka (TAD) has expressed disappointment over the proposed budget allocation for the country’s culture sector in the 2025-26 national budget. Although the allocation has been slightly increased compared to the previous year, TAD believes it is still insufficient and fails to reflect the importance of culture in national development.

In a press statement, TAD President and noted actor Azad Abul Kalam said, “Culture plays a vital role in shaping a nation’s identity, preserving its history, and building its future. Unfortunately, this sector continues to be neglected when it comes to financial allocation.”

The statement further mentioned that TAD had earlier proposed allocating at least 1 percent of the total national budget to the culture sector. However, the current proposal does not meet that demand.

Cultural activists, including theatre artists, musicians, painters, and others, have long been working with limited resources and opportunities, the organization noted.

“To ensure sustainable financial support, infrastructure development, and research-based cultural practices, it is essential to allocate an effective and adequate budget,” the statement added.

Signed by TAD President Azad Abul Kalam and Secretary General Saif Suman, the press release urged the government to treat culture not as a luxury but as a fundamental element of nation-building.

The statement concluded with a call to ensure a suitable and functional budget for the culture sector so that the development of the country's arts and cultural identity is not hindered.

TAD represents a large section of the country’s theatre artists and has consistently advocated for better financial support and policy attention for the cultural community.
