Former Finance Minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith has said, it was significant and highly inspiring that Sylhet Press Club was emphasing on research side by side with the practice of journalism.
The former minister was addressing as the chief guest at a function of awarding a fellowship organised at Aminur Rashid Chowdhury Auditorium of Sylhet Press Club on Tuesday.
The fellowship was awarded to the writer, researcher Selim Awal for his thesis entitled, ‘Journalism of Pre-Independence Sylhet and the Sylhet Press Club’. Sylhet Press Club introduced the fellowship on the occasion of 200-year of publication of the Bangla newspapers.
Presided over by Ikramul Kabir, President of Sylhet Press Club, the function was conducted by Iqbal Mahmud, General Secretary of Sylhet Press Club where Professor Dr. Atful Hye Shibley, former member of University Grant Commission and Vice-Chancellor of North-East University addressed as the special guest.
In his speech, Abul Maal Abdul Muhith further said, Sylhet Press Club was awarding the fellowship to an appropriate person. Fellowship winner Selim Awal excels equally in the fields of Literature, Journalism and in Research. He mentioned, Sylhet Press Club entered into a new era by introducing the research fellowship award.
The chief guest handed over the fellowship certificate and the honorarium to Selim Awal at the function.
In his speech, Prof Dr. Atful Hye Shibley said that a good journalists can not be produced without honesty. The research works of Selim Awal will one day be regarded as a historical research work.
The function was addressed, among others, by Mahi Uddin Ahmed Selim, General Secretary of Sylhet District Sports Association and Abdul Hamid Manik, Researcher and Executive Editor of the Dainik Sylheter Dak.
It is learnt, Sylhet Press Club introduced the fellowship for the first time in 2018. Researcher Selim Awal won the fellowship and concluded his thesis in 16 chapters (articles) by working for last two-year. Recently, his thesis was approved through the meeting of the Executive Committee of Sylhet Press Club.
