Mustard cultivation has increased in the Sylhet division due to the increase in the price of edible oil. This year, the target of mustard cultivation has been set on 24 thousand 632 hectares of land in the four districts of the division. So far mustard has been cultivated on 17 thousand 320 hectares of land. Mustard cultivation has gained popularity in four districts of the division due to good yield.

According to Sylhet Divisional Agriculture Office sources, due to expected yield and good prices last year, mustard cultivation has increased in this region at a large rate. Moreover, free seeds and fertilizers have been distributed by the government to encourage farmers to cultivate mustard in the Sylhet region. 1 kg of mustard seeds, 10 kg of DAP, and 10 kg of MOP fertilizers were distributed among 50 thousand farmers of the Sylhet division under the project to increase the production of oil crops. Among them, these seeds and fertilizers were distributed among 21 thousand 700 people in the Sylhet district, 13 thousand 150 people in the Moulvibazar district, 10 thousand 850 people in the Habiganj district, and 4 thousand 300 people in the Sunamganj district. As a result, the number of mustard farmers in the Sylhet division has also increased compared to the previous period.

In the four districts of the division, a total of 17 thousand 320 hectares of land has been cultivated this time. Out of this, mustard cultivation has been done on 5 thousand 675 hectares in the Sylhet district, 2 thousand 620 hectares in Sunamganj, 4 thousand 250 hectares in Habiganj, and 4 thousand 775 hectares in Moulvibazar.

Talking to the farmers, it is known that compared to last year, the yield of mustard has been quite good this year. Due to floods, silt accumulation in the soil is increasing the yield. Farmers said, due to the high price of oil in the market, we have emphasized mustard cultivation.

Mustard cultivation requires less cost and trouble and can be cultivated in a short period. Although the market price of mustard is low during the full season, it can be easily stored well at home. That is why mustard cultivation can be easily profitable.
