Syed Jamil Ahmed, a renowned theatre director and founding chair of the Department of Theatre and Music at the University of Dhaka, has been appointed Director General of the Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy (BSA). His appointment is seen as a significant moment for the cultural sector in Bangladesh, bringing his vast experience and fresh perspective to the country's leading arts institution.
Hasan Mahmud, Chief Coordinator of the ICT and Innovation Cell and Assistant Director-Administration at BSA, confirmed the news to The Daily Star. "He has been appointed as the Director General of BSA and accepted the position happily," Mahmud said.
Initially, Ahmed was reluctant to take on the role when approached on August 14. However, after reconsidering, he decided to embrace the position, marking a turning point in his career.
Ahmed's appointment follows the resignation of Liaquat Ali Lucky, who served as the Director General of BSA for over a decade. Lucky stepped down on August 12 after the fall of the former government amid the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement.
Tanvir Nahid Khan, an Assistant Professor of Theatre and Performance Studies at the University of Dhaka and a former student of Ahmed, expressed his excitement about the appointment. Speaking to Bangladesh Post, Khan said, "Jamil is a man of theatre, dedicated to his work, and known for his honesty. He is also a creative person, and I am always amused by his works."
Ahmed’s leadership is expected to usher in a new era at BSA, focusing on enhancing the country's cultural heritage. His vast knowledge and dedication to the arts are anticipated to positively impact the institution, which plays a crucial role in promoting Bangladeshi culture and arts.
