Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapon on Tuesday warned of strict action against anyone found involved in irregularities in the distribution of family cards, saying there is no place for brokers or middlemen in the process.
"There is no room for any broker or middleman in the distribution of family cards. If allegations of irregularities are proven, strict action will be taken against those responsible," he said while addressing a tree plantation programme in Gournadi.
The minister reiterated that the government would not tolerate the involvement of brokers or middlemen in distributing family cards.
Earlier in the day, Swapon inaugurated a tree plantation programme along both banks of the Swanirbhar Canal at Kutubpur, where a canal excavation programme had once been launched by former President Ziaur Rahman.
Later, he addressed a meeting as the chief guest, chaired by Krishak Dal Member Secretary Abul Kalam Azad.
Among others, Barishal District BNP General Secretary Mizanur Rahman Khan Mukul, Gournadi Upazila BNP Convener Bir Muktijoddha Syed Sarwar Alam, Upazila BNP Member Secretary Sharif Zahir Sajjad Hannan, Municipal Unit Convener Md Zakir Hossain Sharif, acting Member Secretary Shafiqur Rahman Sharif Swapan, Upazila BNP Senior Joint Convener Badiuzzaman Mintu and District Jubo Dal leader Syed Alam Khan Sentu attended the programme.
Speaking on the occasion, the minister urged people to take part in tree plantation efforts to help protect the environment.
The guests later planted saplings of various species along the canal banks, with local BNP leaders and activists also participating in the programme.
