Swadhinata KS upset Kings in BPL opener

TVS Bangladesh Premier League football got underway with a huge upset when newcomers Swadhinata Krira Sangha inflicted a 2-1 defeat over the reigning champions Bashundhara Kings.

Held at the Shahid Ahsan Ullah Master Stadium, Tongi, giants Bashundhara Kings saw the humiliation with Nedo Turkovic and Rassel Ahmed scored a piece for Swadhinota Krira Sangha when Tawhidul Alam Sabuz scored one of Bashundhara to reduce the margin.

In the day’s other match at the Bir Sreshtha Flight Lt. Motiur Rhaman Stadium, Munshiganj, Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club earned a struggling 2-1 victory over Uttar Baridhara.

It was first time, for the Bashundhara Kings suffer defeat in the opening encounter since their appearance in the top flight of the domestic football while including this they conceded only three defeats till now from 2017.

It was very much surprising that the champions would go down to the promoted Swadhinota KS but it was happened in absence of the favourites Spanish coach Oskar Bruzon and their star players Robson Robinho, Stojan Vranjes looked as their shadow.

However, Swadhdinota KS drew the first blood on 22nd minute with a cross from their Polish forward Rafal Zaborowski inside the box and Bashundhara defender Atiqur Rahman Fahad trying to clear handled the ball.

First time referee could not mark it and directed for spot kick after his assistant signaled for handball.

Bashundhara players strongly protested against the decision but referee did not change his decision and Nedo Turkovic led Swadhinota KS (1-0).

Sawadhinota KS, who actually tipped off during the Independence Cup and Federation Cup football to make upset in the league just did it in their first match against the big side Bashundhara.

Sawadhinota KS, who were very much impressive in the whole 90 minutes game, doubled their margin inside two minutes after the interval through Rasel Ahmed who just took the advantage of Bashundhara defenders lacking to shot the ball home (2-0).

The champions Bashundhara, became desperate to snatch the match result in their favour but could manage only to reduce the margin when Tawhidul Alam Sabuz found the net on 73rd minute.
