Sutrapur Swechchhasebak League president held at Narinda

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has arrested an accused in the case filed over the killing of student leader Nadimul Haque Elem during last year's anti-discrimination movement.

The arrestee was identified as Sarwar Uddin Ahmed Mithu, 55, president of Sutrapur Thana unit of Swechchhasebak League.

Based on secret information, a team of CID (Dhaka Metro South) conducted a drive on early hours of Monday and arrested him from his Narinda Road residence under Gandaria Police Station in the capital, said Jashim Uddin Khan,

Special Super of Police (Media) CID on Tuesday noon.

On July 19 last year, Nafimul Hoque alias Elem, a former student of Sheikh Borhanuddin College and an active activist of the anti-discrimination movement, was shot dead near Patla Khan Lane adjacent to Kabi Nazrul College in Old Dhaka.

Following the incident, the victim’s mother, Ismat Ara, filed a murder case with Sutrapur Police Station accusing Sheikh Hasina and 88 others (Case No-01, dated 01/09/2024) under sections 302/120(B)/109/34 of the Penal Code. Another case (No-03, dated 24/08/2024) over the same incident was filed by anti-discrimination student movement leader Shamsul Alam Arefin with Sutrapur Police Station under sections 34/109/149/302 of the Penal Code.

The case is now being investigated by CID’s Dhaka Metro South unit. Mithu has been produced before court with a remand petition while further legal proceedings are underway.

CID said investigation and drives are continuing to identify and arrest others involved in the killing.
