Two students of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) have been expelled for life following allegations of raping a fellow student.

The expelled students are Swagata Das (Partha) and Shanto Tara (Adnan), both third-year students of the university's Department of Sociology.

The decision was made during an emergency syndicate meeting held at 11am on Tuesday. The matter was confirmed by syndicate member Abdul Kaiyum Chowdhury, who stated that the university's disciplinary committee had recommended permanent expulsion for the two students, and the syndicate approved the recommendation.

In addition to the expulsion, the syndicate also discussed measures to enhance campus security, according to Abdul Kaiyum Chowdhury.

On May 2, the two accused students allegedly raped a female student of the same department at a private hostel. The survivor later filed a written complaint with the university's proctor on June 19. Following the complaint, the accused students were arrested and sent to jail through court proceedings.

Subsequently, after the survivor filed a formal police case, the court approved a four-day remand for both accused on Monday.
