Significant improvements in awareness and economic resilience are being observed among indigenous and marginalised communities in Nawabganj Upazila of Dinajpur, thanks to the comprehensive initiatives of the ‘SUPPORT’ project implemented by Islamic Relief Bangladesh.
The project, titled "Sustainable Livelihoods Development of the Extreme Poor Communities (SUPPORT)," is being carried out across seven unions of Nawabganj. It is benefiting around 3,000 underprivileged families, including 315 Santal and Turi households. The project delivers income-generating training, cash assistance, technical support, women-led self-help groups, leadership development, healthcare and food security programmes.
So far, ‘121 women’s groups’ have been formed. These groups engage in savings activities, receive interest-free loans, operate food banks, and are playing a key role in community development. Project Manager Kajol Kumar Bosak noted that the initiative not only strengthens economic conditions but also fosters awareness of rights and collective action.
Participants have received training in livestock rearing, poultry farming and vegetable cultivation. Many have turned these skills into sustainable livelihoods. Sanomoni Kisku from Raghunathpur now runs her household through cattle rearing, while Arati Kisku started a grocery business and is now actively engaged in social work.
Group leader Bilkis Khatun emphasised how leadership and financial literacy training have boosted women’s confidence and enabled them to claim public services.
The project also addresses education and adolescent health. Afreen Nahar Nipa, a student at Raghunathpur Girls’ High School, reported increased school attendance following the installation of sanitary vending machines and awareness campaigns on health, nutrition and child rights.
Islamic Relief’s Advocacy Coordinator Shafiul Azam highlighted the organisation’s mission to uphold dignity and development since 1991. Local chairman Nazrul Islam praised the initiative as a model worth replicating nationwide.
