Supply disruption ups commodity prices

Due to government restrictions on different districts, supply of daily essentials in the capital’s kitchen markets is being disrupted, resulting in fish, meat, onion and vegetable prices going up. 

Beef which was selling at Tk 580 per kilogram (kg) was selling at Tk 600, a rise of TK 20, broiler chicken at Tk 160 and sonali chicken, Tk 270 on Friday. 

On the other hand, imported ginger was being sold at Tk 170 per kg, up from Tk 130, and local ginger that was Tk 80 to Tk 100 per kg was being sold at Tk 120 to Tk 130. Garlic is being sold at Tk 125 with an increase of Tk 5. The price of onion has gone up by Tk 2. The price of flour has increased by Tk 4 per kg. 

Besides, the price of edible oil, which has been rising for several months, is not falling at all. All kinds of vegetables are being sold at high prices. Almost all the vegetables are being sold for over Tk 60.  

Rampura Bazar kitchen market businessman Asadul said, “Ginger prices have suddenly gone up in the wholesale market. As we are buying at a higher price, we cannot but sell at higher prices at the retail market”.

However, a consumer at the same market told this journalist that the prices of various spices, including ginger, go up every year before Eid-ul-Adha. As part of that, traders have started increasing those prices.

In the vegetable market, brinjal was being sold at Tk 60 per kg, cucumber at Tk 40 to Tk 50 per kg, parwal Tk 40 to Tk 50, okra Tk 50, string bean Tk 70, carrots Tk 80 to Tk 100, tomato Tk 100, bitter gourd Tk 60, wax gourd Tk 50, snake gourd Tk 30, papaya Tk 40, spiny gourd Tk 60, and green chili Tk 40. 

Potato was selling at Tk 25 per kg. Besides, per kg onion was being sold at Tk 50 to Tk 55. In these markets, BR-28 rice was selling at Tk 48 to 50 per kg, Miniket Tk 60 to Tk 62, Nazirshail Tk 62 to Tk 65, coarse rice Tk 45 to Tk 48. Edible oil was selling at Tk 151 to Tk 155 per liter. 

Meanwhile, fish prices were quite high this week. The prices of all kinds of fish including rui (rohu), catla, shing, magur, pabda, and shrimp have gone up at least Tk 30 to Tk 50 per kg as compared to those last week.
