Sunamganj town most risky for earthquake

500 volunteers prepared to face earthquake risk

A month-long training programme for volunteers on community level to reduce the risk of earthquake was inaugurated in Sunamganj on Thursday. 

Five hundred volunteers selected from ward no 2, 3 and 5 of Sunamganj Municipality is participating in the training programme co-organized by Fire Service Civil Defense and Sunamganj Municipality under the National Resilience Program (NRP).

Seven trainers including Acting Deputy Director of Sylhet Division Fire Service Civil Defense Md. Kobad Ali Sarker, Deputy Assistant Director of Sunamganj Fire Service Civil Defense Md. Shafiqul Islam Bhuiyan are conducting the training program. UNDP Technical Assistant Mehedi Modasser, Co-Focal of the Project Nizam Uddin, UNDP Officer Palash Mondal and Habibur Rahman were present at the inauguration among others. 

Md. Kobad Ali Sarkar said the NRP has selected the Sunamganj municipality as one of the most vulnerable areas in the recently published ‘Seismic Map’ in Sunamganj. Besides, Rangamati, Rangpur and Tangail districts of Bangladesh are also identified as vulnerable on the map. The goal of the government is to create volunteers across the country gradually, he added.
