Sultan Utsab begins today

A two-day long Sultan Utsab-2019 in oservane of 95th birth anniversary of world-renowned artist SM Sultan will start at Sultan Smriti Sangrashala and District Shilpakala Academy premises in Narail today.

Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy has organized the Utsab to mark the birth anniversary of the famous artist.

In observance of the occasion, Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy have chalked out a daylong programmes at Sultan Smriti Sangrahasala on Saturday. The programme includes an art competition at 8:00 am, Journey by boat on Chitra river with children at 9:30 am, prize giving ceremony and children workshop at 10:30 am,  Art exhibition in District Shilpakala Academy at 11:30 am.Folk song will hold on Shilpakala Academy mancha at 4:00 pm. A poetry session attended by local poets will be held in the same time and same place. Artist Shaon Akand will present the documentary on the Sultan mancha at 5:00 pm and The documentary Adam Surat  will be exhibition in Shilpakala Academy mancha at 6:00 pm.

Director General (DG) of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy Liakat Ali Lucky expected to attend the Utsab tomorrow’s (Sunday) discussion session at 5:00 pm in district shilpakala academy premises as chief guest with chaired deputy commissioner of Narail who also SM Sultan Foundation’s president Anjuman Ara.Superintendent of Police Md.Jashim Uddin, Narail Municipal Mayor Md.Jahangir Biswas, secretary of SM Sultan Foundation Ashiqur Rahman Miku are expected to attend the Utsab discussion as special guests. District Shilpakala Academy general secretary Maloy Kumar Kundu will give welcome speech in the discussion. 

Sultan was born at Masumdia village in Narail in 1924. hit the headlines in the art world much before he was known as a painter to the people of his home land. Leading a very simple life far away from the madding crowd at his village home, the selfless painter spent most of his life completely engrossed in paint and brush. 

His very simple but highly philosophic art which revelled in nature and the people of Bangladesh, has become the prime source of inspiration for the new generation of painters.

His artworks were shown in Simla of India in 1946, in Lahore    and Karachi in 1948-49 and paintings were exhibited in New York, Boston, London and Michigan university in 1959, long before his exhibition at Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy in 1976.He joined the International conference of painters in America in 1950 as the representative of the then Pakistan government.

Sultan ,a legendary artist of Bangladesh won Ekushey Padak in 1982, Bangladesh Charu Shilpi Sangsad Award in 1986 and Swadhinata Padak in 1993.He was declared the Man of Asia in 1982 by Cambridge University and Bangladeh government declared him as resident of artist in 1984. 

Sultan died in Jessore combined Military Hospital on 10 October, 1994.He was buried at the yard of his own house of the of the Masumdia-Kurigram area in Narail Municipality.
