Chuadanga's Darshana Carew & Company inaugurated the 2022-2023 sugarcane threshing season. Bangladesh Food and Sugar Corporation Chairman Arifur Rahman Apu officially inaugurated the current threshing season on Friday afternoon. Mohammad Mosharf Hossain, Managing Director of Carew & Company, Maffuzur Rahman Manju, Chairman of Chuadanga Zilla Parishad, Ali Munchur Babu, Chairman of Damurhuda Upazila Parishad and others were also present.
Carew sugar mill authority has set a target of 3 thousand 840 metric tons of sugar by crushing 62 thousand metric tons of sugarcane in 53 threshing days this year.
According to sugar mill authority sources, this time sugarcane is standing on 4 thousand 230 acres of land. Out of which Carew's own land is 1 thousand 50 acres. The remaining 3 thousand 180 acres of farmers' land has been cultivated with sugarcane. Due to the proper care of sugarcane, modern methods of sugarcane cultivation and overall care of the officials including the managing director of the mill, the yield of sugarcane has been good this year. Due to which it is assumed that sugar production target will be achieved with sugarcane crushing.
On the other hand, sugarcane planting in the 2022-23 sugarcane planting season was officially started on September 1. The target of planting sugarcane on 7000 acres has been set this year. So far sugarcane plantation has been completed on 700 acres of land. However, the price of sugarcane has been increased compared to last time. The price has been increased from Tk 140 to Tk 180 at the mill gate. Besides, the price has been increased from Tk 136 to Tk 176 in sugarcane buying centers.
Managing Director of Darshana Carew Sugar Mill, Mosharf Hossain said that although it is not possible to make the sugar factory profitable in the coming season, all necessary preparations have been made to reduce major losses. Farmers are being made interested in beekeeping. All kinds of facilities are ensured to the beekeepers. Meetings and courtyard meetings with farmers are ongoing. He called upon the sugarcane farmers in the area to protect their precious resource Carew sugar mill besides earning more profit by growing more sugarcane.
In addition, the letter signed by the Secretary of Bangladesh Sugar and Food Industry Corporation, Chowdhury Ruhul Amin Qaiser, said that sugarcane crushing will start in 9 sugar mills in the country this year. Among them, North Bengal Sugar Mills on November 25, Natore Sugar Mills on December 2, Rajshahi and Jil Bangla Sugar Mills on the same day, Darshana Carew, Mubarakganj, Thakurgaon and Faridpur sugar mills on December 23, Jaipurhat Sugar Mills cane crushing season will begin on December 30.
