Sugar crunch persists: Veg stable

The ongoing sugar crunch in the kitchen market in the capital is still not over. 

The sellers said there has been a shortage of sugar supply in the market for about two months. Even if it is available in the wholesale market, it has to be bought at higher prices than the price fixed by the government.

Meanwhile, the price of eggs per dozen has increased by Tk 10. Prices of other daily essentials including rice, oil, vegetables are stable.

Due to the adverse effects of weather capital’s kitchen market has witnessed less buyers than expected during the weekly holiday. Such a scene was witnessed in several kitchen markets in the capital on Friday. 

The government has fixed Tk 102 per kg of loose sugar and Tk 107 per kg of packaged sugar. Still sugar is not available in most of the markets. Even if it is available somewhere, consumers have to buy it at Tk110 to Tk115 per kg. Open sugar is also being distributed at the same rate. But sugarcane red sugar is being sold at a much higher price than this. Wrapped sugar is being sold at Tk 130 to 140 per kg.

On the other hand, the price of green chili has increased by Tk30 to Tk40 per kg compared to the last week. A kg of chili is now being sold in the market atTk 110 to Tk 120 per kg which was Tk80 a week ago. Eggplant is being sold at Tk40 to Tk60 per kg, cabbage and cauliflower is Tk 30 to Tk 40 per piece. Besides, the price of almost all vegetables including radish, tomato, beans is between Tk20 to Tk50 per kg.

Local onion is being sold at Tk 40 per kg. The price of garlic has increased slightly. Chinese garlic retail price is Tk 120 and ginger Tk 150 per kg.
