Sufferings of the flood hit people remain continued as the ongoing flood situation in the country’s eastern, northern and different regions remain unchanged leaving thousands of people marooned by the flood water.
Vast areas of most of the districts in Sylhet and Rangpur divisions remained under water while many upazilas in Mymensing, Netrokona, Feni, Rangamati and Bandarban are also submerged by the flood water.
State Minister for Disaster Management and Relief Md Mohibur Rahman on Saturday said around 20 lakh of people in 15 districts were affected by the ongoing flood caused by torrential rains and onrush of upstream water.
Sylhet, Sunamganj, Netrakona, Moulvibazar, Habiganj, Rangpur, Jamalpur, Gaibandha, Feni, Rangamati, Bogura, Kurigram, Sirajganj, Lalmonirhat and Cox’s Bazar are the worst-hit districts, he said while speaking at a press briefing held at the Secretariat.
Flood situation remains unchanged in Gaibandha
Flood situation in char and river basin areas under four upazilas of the district remained unchanged as the water level of the Brahmaputra river was steady during the last 24 hours till Saturday morning.
The official of Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) here said the Brahmaputra was flowing 86cm over the danger level at Fulchhari Ghat point of the district.
As a result, submerging chars located in the eastern side and river basins in the western side of 29 unions under Sundarganj, Sadar, Fulchhari and Saghata upazilas have been flooded making 67,729 families marooned.
Of them, some 5,200 families have been marooned in Sundarganj upazila, 39,889 in Sadar upazila, 7,490 in Fulchhari upazila and 15,150 in Saghata upazila of the district.
To face the ongoing flood, as many as 181 flood shelter centers have been prepared in the upazilas, he also said.
Boats and speed boats have been kept ready to bring the flood victims to safer places, he said adding: “Adequate medical teams, livestock teams, agriculture teams and volunteer teams had been formed to conduct rescue operations.”
DC Kazi Nahid Rasul said the district administration is on high alert about the flood and all sorts of preparations have been taken to deal with the flood situation smoothly.
//1.5 lakh marooned by floods in Kurigram as rivers swell
In Kurigram, the flood situation in has worsened, with rising water levels in all major rivers leaving 1.5 lakh people stranded.
Deputy Commissioner of the district Mohammad Saidul Arif reported that the Brahmaputra River was flowing 72 cm above its danger point at Chilmari, 71 cm above at Hatiya, and 68 cm above at Nunkhawa. The Dharla River was one cm above its red mark at Dharla Bridge and 10 cm above at Taluk Shimulbari as of Saturday morning. Additionally, the Dudhkumar River was 22 cm above its danger level at Pateshwari.
Due to these rising water levels, 84,000 people across 42 unions in eight upazilas—Phulbari, Nageshwar, Kurigram Sadar, Ulipur, Razarhat, Chilmari, Roumari, and Char Rajibpur—have been affected. Local representatives estimate that 150,000 people are currently stranded.
The floods have forced the suspension of academic activities in 37 government primary schools, with floodwaters entering 146 government primary schools. Classes in 20 madrasas and 43 secondary schools have also been suspended, according to the Deputy Commissioner.
The floods have inundated 6,615 hectares of land in the district. In response, 83 medical teams have been deployed to provide treatment to those affected.
Residents are increasingly seeking refuge, with many heading to shelter centers as their homes are submerged in chest-deep water. Others are spending their nights on boats, illustrating the severe impact of the flooding.
The situation remains critical as local authorities continue to monitor river levels and provide necessary support to the stranded population.
