We express deep concern over the sudden spurt in killing and mugging in the capital Dhaka ahead of Ramadan. Commuters especially who, travel the city between midnight and dawn feel helpless as harden criminals roam in and around freely during that time.

Three people were murdered, a local Awami League and a college were shot to death, a dentist was stabbed to death, and many incidents of mugging took place all in the space of a week. Reportedly, at least 200 crime prone spots have been identified in the city. Over 300 members of 50 organised criminal gangs, including professional killers, muggers and robbers have become desperate in those spot of the capital and on its outskirts.

The sudden rise in criminal activities has triggered panic among city dwellers. These criminals prefer midnight to early morning hours because most of the roads, streets, lanes and bylanes of the city wear deserted look during that time as people’s movement decline sharply.

We hope the government will do everything

possible to ensure security of lives and

property of the city’s people

Apart from these, commuters hardly see the uniformed members of law enforcement agencies patrolling free roads across the city. So, the criminal gangs take the advantage of empty roads, commit various crimes including murder and mugging.

Killers, muggers, robbers and other criminals should be dealt with an iron hand immediately in order to ensure security and peace in the city. The law enforcers should also be committed to establish the capital Dhaka as a safe haven for the common people by combating the incidents of killing, mugging, robbing and heinous activities. In future they should take adequate precaution to avoid recurrence of such crimes between midnight and dawn and identified criminals should be arrested immediately.

Security should be tightened at the strategic points of the city as many people travel those areas between midnight and dawn. Additional law enforcement personnel will also have to be deployed to strengthen surveillance in the capital considering the latest law and order situation.

Members of the law enforcement agencies will also have to be deployed both in uniform and with plain cloth in every crime prone spot. Besides, security checkpoints will have to be set up at strategic points in the city while security personnel must continue patrolling between midnight and dawn to ensure security to commuters. Block raids will also have to be carried out on suspicious hideouts of the criminals. We hope the government will do everything possible to ensure security of lives and property of the city’s people.
