Sudden rise of Padma water hits crops of 400 hectares at Ishwardi

Crops of at least 400 hectares of land have been plunged under water as a result of sudden increase of water in the river Padma near Ishwardi under Pabna district.

People living at the adjacent unions of Sara, Paksey and Luxmikunda informed, due to flash flood from upstream of the river Padma, water level of the river increased abnormally during last three-day. The water level at the Hardinge Bridge point increased to five centimetre during last 24-hour. Farmers living beside the river were worried as the standing crops of their land have been inundated by the increased water level.

Jahurul Islam, Executive Engineer of Water Development Board, Pabna, informed usually water level of the river Padma does not increase during this time of year but due to on rush of water from across the border, water of the river Padma was increasing for last three days. The Padma near the Hardinge Bridge point was flowing only 46 centimetre behind the danger level this morning, he informed further.

Abdul Latif, Upazila Agriculture Officer of Ishwardi informed, crops and vegetables including sugarcane, cauliflower, lentil, radish, maskalai, carrot, bean, onion, chilli and paddy of some 400 hectares of land have been inundated in flash flood.

At the same time due to incessant rainfall for the last two-days, crops of the villages Luxmikunda, Dadapur, Charkuralia, Kamalpur and Beelkedar have been submerged.

Rakib Pramanik, a marginal farmer of Charkuralia village under Luxmikunda union informed, the Maskalai he planted in seven bighas of land has been inaundated by flash flood of the river Padma and the incessant rainfall for last three days. Kaiyum Pramanik of the same village informed, Maskalai he showed on 90 bighas of land has been damaged in flash flood and rain.

Emdadul Haque Rana Sarder, Chairman of Sara union parishad informed, crops of low lying land of the union has been inundated in flash flood. Such increase of water level in the river Padma during this period of year was abnormal. Water of river Padma was flowing just three feet below the river protection embankment from Komorpur to Saraghat union. 

Enamul Haque Biswas, Chairman of Paksey union informed, due to sudden increase of water level of river Padma, crops of Rooppur and adjacent villages has been inaundated but there was no damage of houses yet.
