Following the spread of coronavirus in Bangladesh, it was witnessed in different districts that Azaan (prayer call) was being recited from mosques and homes simultaneously at an unusual time on Thursday night.
After 10:00 pm, which is well past the time of Isha Azaan across Bangladesh, several observers heard multiple calls to prayer in various parts of the country, including Cumilla, Chandpur and Brahmanbaria. Many people said that they heard Azan at an unexpected time.
Our Chandpur Correspondent reports that the sound of Azaan as well call of prayers was suddenly heard in the mosques of different villages at Hajiganj upazila in in the district at midnight. One Azan was being given hearing another but, no one could give exact information about the reason why it happened.
Imam Hossain Eman, a resident of Hajiganj who lives in Dhaka, said that he had heard that a baby died after birth on Thursday morning in the village of Jagannathpur in Hajiganj upazila. It was that baby who told to recite Azan.
When asked several people of that village to find out whether it was true they said it was a rumour and it is not true. Historic Hajiganj Boro Mosque Authorities said that it was a rumour. They did not announce the Azan.
Abdul Mamin Farooqi, Khatib of Mohammadpur Purbapara Jame Mashjid of Gandharbhapur Uttor Union of the upazila and former Vice-Chancellor of Kakoirtola Senior Madrasa said we did not get any such instructions and there is no legal basis of doing such a thing in the Shariah. It must have been rumours. The Imam of Munshibari mosque in the same village said that a Hujur asked him to give Azan. So he gave Azan according to that. But he says Azan was given for protection from corona virus.
Hajiganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge Alamgir Hossain Roni said, “We have not received any instructions. But we heard about Azans being given in various mosques since 10 pm”. Meanwhile, the Islamic Foundation or the mupazila administration could not provide any information in this regard. They say it's a rumour.
